Preserving Our Culture

Still not over Valentina’s dress from this weekend. It came all the way from Puerto Rico, thanks to one of my aunts.

Preserving our culture, while celebrating this nation is a way of life for immigrant families in the United States. This preservation takes constant attention and can often be challenging. It was a tough balancing act, especially growing up in Nebraska.

It’s “arroz con gandules” alongside the Thanksgiving Turkey. It’s 12 grapes to ring in the New Year, as the ball drops on TV. It’s guayaberas and cigars on a 4th of July.

We love this country, while missing the one we came from, fighting a memory that wants to slip away. To understand that is to understand the immigrant experience in America.
